Selecting the right heating or cooling system for you

Heating and cooling systems provide your household with a comfortable climate all year round, whether it’s a hot summer night or a chilly winter morning.

Wall Hung Split Systems

Designed to heat a single room or open area, wall hung splits (WHS) comprise of an indoor unit (head) which is located on the wall and an outdoor unit (compressor and condenser) which is usually located in a convenient position outside the house. Because these units are reverse cycle, they have the ability to heat or cool a desired area. Some WHS have the ability to be made into a multi system where several indoor units are serviced by one outdoor unit, giving the homeowner the ability to heat multiple rooms.

  • Can effectively cool and heat the desired area (room)
  • Easy and fast installation process
  • Cheapest form of electric heating

Ducted Air Conditioners

Designed to heat the entire home, ducted refrigerated reverse cycle air conditioners have an inside unit (in the roof) and outdoor unit (condenser and compressor) which utilise a series of ducting to distribute warm air throughout the home.

  • Can cool/heat an entire home
  • Allergy friendly
  • Works well in humid environments

Gas Ducted Heaters

Designed to heat your entire home a gas ducted unit sits under the floor, in the roof or externally outside the house. Gas ducted heating is available through natural gas or LPG units. Gas ducted heating systems intake air from a return air grille which is taken to the heater where it is heated. This heated air is then distributed throughout the house through a series of ducting and outlets. Once the home reaches the set temperature the unit will switch off.

  • Available in both zoned and un-zoned systems
  • Ability to heat the entire house
  • Instant warmth

Evaporative Coolers

Designed to cool the entire home, an evaporative cooler sits externally on a roof. An evaporative cooler draws in warm air over moistened pads to cool the air down. This cool fresh air then gets filtered through a series of ducts in the roof and gets distributed throughout outlets.

  • Slightly cheaper set-up costs and significantly cheaper running costs
  • The air inside yourb house is not re-circulated
  • A natural process of air cooled by water means it won't dry out the air, or irritate your skin, throat or eyes
  • As hot air is pushed out of the home, doors can be left open
  • Works very well in dry climates

Designed to cool the entire home, an evaporative cooler sits externally on a roof. An evaporative cooler draws in warm air over moistened pads to cool the air down. This cool fresh air then gets filtered through a series of ducts in the roof and gets distributed throughout outlets.

  • Efficienctly cools/heats only the areas that need it
  • Individual room temperature control

Cassette Air Conditioners

Designed to cool/heat your home, Cassettes are an effective way of heating and cooling a single room at the home or in the office. Cassettes are generally installed when there is no ability to install a wall hung split on the wall or there is limited room in the ceiling for ducted systems.

  • Programmable thermostats
  • Variable speed
  • Individual room temperature control

Why go with a professional installer?

When installing an air conditioning system, it is always extremely important to get these units installed by a licensed installer. Some of these units require gas or refrigeration and it is imperative these are installed correctly with no leaks. Any unit installed by an unqualified installer will void all warranties.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find the answers you need to some of the most common heating and cooling questions.

What is the difference between the indoor and outdoor units of an air conditioner?

Split systems or wall mounted units are comprised with both an indoor and outdoor component which work in tandem to generate the perfect climate inside your home or office. The indoor component of a split system air conditioner is usually wall mounted in a central living space. This piece will comprise the vent where cooled or warmed air is expelled and the filters which trap dust and other foreign particles before they enter your home. This unit is also from where you control your internal climate, setting the temperature and the fan speed.

The outdoor component of your split system air conditioner contains the compressor. This part of the air conditioner is responsible for heating or cooling the air before it enters into your home. It is connected to the indoor unit by a network of pipes carrying refrigerant required to heat or cool the air-conditioned air. This unit may need particular space requirements that your installer will explain in detail, but generally a well ventilated outside space near your wall mounted internal unit and large enough to comfortably house the compressor unit is what you will need to consider.

What are the most popular types of air conditioning units?

Ducted air conditioning units
This type of air conditioner consists of a compressor unit outside the building which feeds freshly air-conditioned air through a network of vents throughout the building, maintaining the climate in all rooms simultaneously. Although very effective, ducted air conditioning units can become expensive to run. It's best to talk to a licenced installer to see if a ducted air conditioner is best for you.

Split system air conditioners
A split system air conditioner is usually mounted on a wall in a room inside your building and will feed cool air into that room. If the placement is correct, you could effectively feed that air throughout the rest of the building.

Chat with a qualified air conditioner installer to understand which units and which placement is best for your home or office.

How often should I clean the filters on my air conditioner?

Regular air conditioner maintenance like cleaning the filters prevents the build-up of dust and other particles inside the unit and will ensure effective and efficient running. Dirty filters can sometimes force your unit to work harder than it needs to, which can result in more expensive running costs. The main purpose of your filters is to prevent foreign particles from entering the air and can help to minimise allergens inside your home.

As not all air conditioning filters are the same, we recommend familiarising yourself with the owner’s manual. If your unit has not come with a hardcopy of the owner’s manual you can usually find a copy on the manufacturer’s website. The owner’s manual will include a regular home maintenance guide as well the part numbers and descriptions for any replacement pieces like your air filters that you might need.

If you’re unsure of exactly how to maintain your filters, we recommend speaking with your installer or the unit’s manufacturer.

How much does it cost to install a new air conditioner?

Installation costs for an air conditioner will vary depending on things such as the age and state of your home or apartment, the type of air conditioner you already have installed, and whether you intend to change the position of your current unit when you install your new one.

Consult a licenced installer for a detailed quote and to ensure you select the right air conditioner for your home or office.

How do I know which air conditioning unit or system is best for me?

When choosing the best air conditioning unit for your needs it’s important that you understand exactly how the space your trying to control the temperature of works. Some things to consider early on in your search for the ideal air conditioning unit include:

What kind of natural light and warmth from the sun does your building and the rooms you’re looking to cool or warm receive? Start with understanding the aspect that your home or intended building faces.

What is your building is made of? Heating or cooling a brick home, for example, is much easier than heating or cooling a weatherboard cottage. Brick is a great natural insulator and will retain an internal temperature very effectively

What kind of insulation – if any – do you already have installed?

Do Split Systems heat and cool?

Yes. Split systems offer heating and cooling.

Can I control and set different temperatures with Ducted Air Conditioners?

With a zone control system such as Myzone 3, you can control the temperature in different rooms. For more information, consult your installer or speak to a Metalflex team member.

Can I install a new air conditioner myself?

No, we recommend that any air conditioning system is always installed by a licensed installer. Any unit installed by an unqualified installer will void all warranties.

Do I need to have my windows and/or doors open when using Evaporative Cooling?

Evaporative cooling works best when windows and doors are partially left open to expel air already within the house. This will allow the fresh, cool air to move through the rooms.
